Senior bureaucrat and former Finance Secretary Subhash Chandra Garg on Friday took over as the new power secretary.

The senior most officer in the finance ministry, Garg was shifted to the power ministry in a bureaucratic reshuffle on Wednesday. On Thursday, he announced that he had applied for voluntary retirement from service.

"Handed over charge of Economic Affairs today (Thursday). Learnt so much in the Finance Ministry and Economic Affairs Dept. Will take charge in Power Ministry tomorrow (Friday). Have also applied for Voluntary Retirement from IAS with effect from 31st October", Garg had tweeted on Thursday.

Atanu Chakraborty has taken over as the finance secretary in the ministry.

An interaction of Garg with the media is scheduled later on Friday.

Garg was in charge of the Department of Economic Affairs, and was designated the finance secretary. However, in a surprise move, he was named power secretary in an order issued late on Wednesday. The bureaucratic reshuffle came just a day after the parliamentary procedure for approval of Union Budget 2019 was completed.

As the economic affairs secretary, Garg was in charge of fiscal policy, matters related to the Reserve Bank of India, and was closely involved in the preparation of the budget.
