Confirmed cases of Covid-19 continued to rise, albeit at a slower pace, at a time when western countries are seeing renewed waves of the infection and consequent lockdowns.

India added nearly 48,000 fresh cases in a matter of 24 hours, taking the total tally to over 86.8 lakh in the world’s second-worst infected country, according to the Health Ministry’s update as of 8 a.m. on Nov. 12.

Active cases remained below the 5-lakh mark for the second straight day.

Daily additions have also remained below 50,000 for five consecutive days now, causing the rapid decline in active cases, which climbed above 10 lakh in mid-September. Naturally, the daily recoveries have also declined but have managed to remain higher than fresh cases.

Global Update

A deadly resurgence continued in Europe, with the U.K. becoming the first country in the region to surpass 50,000 deaths. Germany reported its highest daily fatalities since mid-April, and a state premier warned that Christmas markets and religious services may be in jeopardy with the current rate of infection.

New York state ordered bars and restaurants with liquor licenses to close at 10 p.m. as officials in the pandemic’s original U.S. epicenter struggle to prevent a second wave. California’s positivity rate climbed to a two-month high, while hospitalisations across the U.S. rose to a record.

Globally, confirmed coronavirus cases near 51.6 million with more than 1.27 million dead.
