Coronavirus India Updates: Active Cases Decline; Over 18,000 New Infections Reported

Active coronavirus cases declined today, after a small rise on Thursday, at a time when the country is preparing to roll out an inoculation programme to stem the world’s second-worst outbreak.

Active cases fell to 2.25 lakh , according to data released by the Union Health Ministry as of Jan. 8, 2021, as authorities reported over 18,000 new infections in the last 24 hours and over 20,000 recoveries in the same time period. 73 of these active cases are of the new U.K. variant, according to data received from the Health Ministry on Wednesday.

Total recoveries crossed the 1-crore mark yesterday while total conformed cases now stand above 1.04 crore. Over 1.5 lakh people have succumbed to the virus since the beginning of the pandemic.

British medics will be able to give Covid-19 shots to hundreds of thousands of people every day by Jan. 15, U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson said. Brazil surpassed 200,000 virus deaths, second only to the U.S., on a day when it reported the most infections of the pandemic.

New York, New Jersey, Florida and North Carolina are among states that reported daily records as Illinois became the fifth state to surpass 1 million infections. Fatalities in Arizona reached a high and those in California were just two deaths from the record set at the end of 2020.

Globally over 87.5 million people have been infected with coronavirus while over 1.8 have died.
