Trump Pledges ‘Major Border Tax’ on Firms That Shift Jobs Abroad

(Bloomberg) -- President-elect Donald Trump reaffirmed a campaign promise to impose a significant tax on U.S. companies that shift production overseas.

"There will be a major border tax on these companies that are leaving and getting away with murder," Trump said at a news conference in New York. "If our politicians had what it takes they would’ve done it years ago."

Trump made penalizing firms that move jobs abroad a key theme of his campaign and since his election he has criticized companies such as General Motors Co. for shifting production overseas on his Twitter feed.

“You’ve got a lot of places you can move,” Trump said, listing other states. “I don’t care, as long as it’s within the United States.”
