Trump Says Bomb Scares Are Slowing Republicans’ Momentum in Midterms

(Bloomberg) -- President Donald Trump said a wave of bombing attempts against prominent Democrats is slowing political momentum for Republicans as congressional elections approach.

“Now this “Bomb” stuff happens and the momentum greatly slows - news not talking politics,” Trump said in a tweet Friday morning. “Very unfortunate, what is going on. Republicans, go out and vote!”

Law enforcement agencies have found a dozen apparent explosive devices sent to prominent Democrats and targets of conservative vitriol over the past week. Federal authorities discovered two more apparent bombs on Friday, one addressed to Democratic Senator Cory Booker of New Jersey and the other to James Clapper, the former director of national intelligence.

Federal authorities arrested a man in Florida in connection with the investigation into the suspected explosive packages, CNN reported Friday, citing multiple unidentified law enforcement sources.

Early voting for the midterms has been at “unprecedented levels,” Michael McDonald, an associate professor at the University of Florida who tracks such data, said earlier this week on C-Span.

“We’ve never seen anything like this in American politics before where so many people are voting in a midterm election this early,” he said.
