WhatsApp named Abhijit Bose, co-founder and chief executive officer of payments platform Ezetap, as its first India head.

Bose, who will begin his new role in early 2019, will build WhatsApp’s first full team outside California and will be based in Gurugram, the Facebook-owned messaging app said in a statement today. India is the largest market for WhatsApp with more than 200 million monthly active users.

“As a successful entrepreneur himself, Abhijit knows what it takes to build meaningful partnerships that can serve businesses across India,” Matt Idema, chief operating officer of WhatsApp, said in the statement.

Bose will also be responsible for helping large and small businesses connect with their customers.
