Twitter Says Mask-for-Edit Button Lure Didn’t Work

Twitter users hoping for the ability to fix a tweet without deleting it and starting over may be disappointed after the social media company said on Wednesday its mask-for-edit button offer didn’t seem to do the trick.

The company had teased in July it would give users the long-sought after ‘edit’ button if people wore face masks to halt the spread of the coronavirus, dangling the offer in a tweet that garnered 2.8 million likes and almost 700,000 retweets.

Despite repeated requests for the feature, Twitter’s CEO Jack Dorsey said earlier this year that the company would “probably never” introduce it because of the way it could be used to spread misinformation.

U.S. Covid-19 infections rose above 6 million this week. The country’s leading infectious disease expert Anthony Fauci warned early Wednesday that the upcoming Labor Day holiday may lead to an increase in coronavirus cases but said a surge could be avoided if people wear masks and steer clear of crowded places.
