Millions of EV Charging Points Planned for U.S., Europe by 2025

(Bloomberg) -- Two electric car charging companies are announcing plans to build 3.5 million plug-in spots in the U.S. and Europe by 2025 in an effort to accelerate the adoption of clean vehicles.

California-based ChargePoint Inc. will deliver 2.5 million places to charge and EVBox will install 1 million new fast and regular chargers, according to a statement Friday by The Climate Group, which helps develop zero-emission programs. The new charging stations will support 37 million electric vehicles that are forecast to be on the road globally by 2025, driving a combined 384 billion electric miles per year.

The announcement was made during the Global Climate Action Summit in San Francisco, where local governments, businesses and investors from around the globe are gathering to support the Paris climate accords. The event, which runs through Friday, is co-chaired by California Governor Jerry Brown and Michael Bloomberg, owner of Bloomberg News’ parent Bloomberg LP. It was organized after U.S. President Donald Trump said last year he would withdraw from the Paris agreement.
