OnePlus unveiled its latest smartphone in India on Thursday, just a day after the global launch. The new flagship – One Plus 6 – which comes close on heels of the previous version, is being touted as an answer to Apple Inc.’s iPhone X, that too at half the price.

The Android phone company has made significant inroads into the Indian market over the last few years, becoming the fastest growing brand in the premium smartphone segment in the country, according to a report by Counterpoint Research. The Chinese mobile phone maker ranks second only to Samsung, it said.

Most respondents to a Twitter poll we posted a day before the India launch said the OnePlus 6 was their first choice of a premium smartphone, leaving behind closest rivals, especially the iPhone X, by a huge margin.

iPhone X Vs OnePlus 6

And while most people we spoke to in this week’s edition of The Weekend Show, were massive fans of the brand because of the features and the sub-Rs 40,000 price tag, there were also Apple and Samsung Galaxy loyalists who just weren’t willing to let go of those brands just yet. Three out of 10 people surveyed said that they were too deeply entrenched in the Apple ecosystem, and would rather save up and buy an iPhone X. The iPhone X is priced in India at upwards of Rs 95,390 for the 64GB model.

Then there were those who found the OnePlus 6 uncannily similar in appearance to the iPhone X, perhaps because of the notch on top of the phone.

Key Features Of OnePlus6

  • 6.3 inch optic AMOLED display.
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor.
  • 16+20 megapixel dual rear cameras.
  • 3300mAh non-removable battery with fast charging.
  • Fingerprint and face unlock.

Price Point A Key

One of the main reason why the brand has captured the imagination of many tech enthusiasts is the affordable price point compared to its peers.

The brand has managed to pack in premium features at nearly half the price to the nearest competitor iPhone X, and is fast making a space that was until now aspirational, a lot more affordable.

There’s more than a couple of options with the OnePlus 6 – 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, and 8GB of RAM with 128GB of storage. The former would set you back by Rs 34,999 and the latter by Rs 4,000 more. For Marvel’s Avengers fans, there’s a special edition that costs Rs 44,999. It sports a Kevlar pattern on the back, is etched with a golden Avengers logo and comes with 256GB of storage.
