Homegrown e-commerce giant Flipkart wants to set up its largest integrated logistics park in Karnataka, to strengthen infrastructure to take on Seattle-based rival Amazon.

The new 4.5-million square foot logistics facility is planned on the outskirts of Bengaluru, the e-commerce giant said in a statement today. It is in the process of acquiring 100 acres of land.

At present the largest e-commerce warehouse in the country is run by Amazon in Telangana, which spans 4 lakh square feet.

The company said the integrated warehouse will not only bring in supply chain efficiency and reduce costs by deploying mechanised warehousing, but will also act as a freight aggregation and distribution hub.

The location of the park will be finalised in the next few months, and Flipkart expects close to 1.5 million square feet of warehousing space to be ready by the middle of next year. Thereafter, the unit will employ 5,000 people directly, apart from creating indirect job opportunities for 15,000, the e-commerce company said.

Flipkart at present has 21 fulfillment centres spread across nine regions, while Amazon has around 41 warehouses spread across 13 states.
