ICRA Research Report

India’s emission control commitments at the recently concluded COP26 summit has laid down an ambitious outlook for investments across sectors. We analyse India’s commitment in two phases – up to 2030, and the net zero target for 2070.

India, being a developing country, is at an inflection point in terms of its energy consumption. While India’s per capita consumption is expected to surge three to four times over the long term, it has parellelly committed to reduce GHG emissions by one billion million tonne by 2030.

India has additionally committed to a net zero carbon emission target by 2070, by when the per capita energy consumption would have surged multifold from the current levels. This, we believe, is a daunting task, and would need massive policy interventions to ensure investments across renewable energy, carbon capture, energy efficiency, electric vehicle adoption, etc. for it to remain profitable enough to sustain well beyond 2030.
