Oscars 2019: ‘Green Book’ Wins Award For ‘Best Picture’

Roma and The Favourite lead the pack with 10 nominations each, followed by A Star is Born and Vice with 8.

Period. End of Sentence, the short documentary film on the stigma surrounding women during menstruation in rural India wins an Oscar in the Documentary Short Subject category.

The run-up to the 91st Academy Awards has been a series of missteps and backtracks by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Nominations for the 91st Annual Academy Awards

Roma and The Favourite lead the pack with 10 nominations each, followed by A Star is Born and Vice with 8. As has become tradition, the 91st Annual Academy Award ceremony will once again take place at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on Sunday, 24 February.

Regina King Wins Award for 'Actress In a Supporting Role'

The first award of the night goes to Regina King for her performance in If Beale Street Could Talk.

The actor gave a heartfelt speech and thanked her mother on stage.

'Black Panther' Picks Up Two Oscars

Black Panther has won the Academy Award for production design and made Oscar history for the second time Sunday evening.

Production designer Hannah Beachler is the first African-American winner in the category. Her win came moments after Black Panther costume designer Ruth Carter became the first black winner in that category. Ruth Carter won the award for her Afro-futuristic wardrobes in Black Panther.

Beachler wins the Oscar along with set designer Jay Hart. Beachler broke down in tears during her acceptance speech, which started out with her thanking Black Panther director Ryan Coogler.

Hannah Beachler is also the first African-American to win an award for Best Production Design, along with Jay Hart for Set Decoration.

In a seeming nod to The Favourite and its Queen Anne's affection for bunnies and elaborate dress, Melissa McCarthy had her audience roaring with laughter as she came out to present the award for costume design dressed in a huge, white queen's gown covered with stuffed rabbits.

The award for Sound Editing, Sound Mixing and Film Editing goes to Bohemian Rhapsody!

'Roma' Wins Oscar For Best Foreign Language Film

Not surprisingly, Netflix film Roma wins the award for Best Foreign Language Film.

Other films of director Alfonso Cuarón have won Academy Awards, but Roma now becomes the first film from Mexico to win the Oscar for best foreign language film. The movie's dialogue is in Spanish and Mixtec.

It is Cuaron's second win of the night. Earlier in the ceremony, he won the best cinematography award.

Mahershala Ali Wins Award For 'Actor In a Supporting Role'

Mahershala Ali, who won the award for ‘Actor In a Supporting Role’ for his performance in Green Book, thanked his grandmother in his acceptance speech.

"I want to dedicate this to my grandmother, who has been in my ear my entire life. Telling me that if at first I don't succeed, try, try, try again. That I can do anything I put my mind to. Always, always pushing me to think positively and I know that I would not be here without her, that she's gotten me over the hump in a lot of ways," he said.

And the award for ‘Best Animated Short Film’ goes to Bao.

Co-Produced By Guneet Monga, ‘Period. End of Sentence’ Wins Award

Period. End of Sentence, the short documentary film on the stigma surrounding menstruating women in rural India, wins an Oscar in the Documentary Short Subject category.

Directed by award-winning Iranian-American filmmaker Rayka Zehtabchi, the film was actually part of The Pad Project, initiated by students at the Oakwood School in Los Angeles and their teacher, Melissa Berton.

Period... is executive produced by Guneet Monga and is co-produced by Monga's Sikhya Entertainment, which has backed films like The Lunchbox and Masaan.

The 26-minute film, available on Netflix, follows girls and women in Hapur in northern India and their experience with the installation of a pad machine in their village.

Lady Gaga Gives Emotional Speech After She Bags Award For 'Original Song'

Shallow from A Star Is Born wins ‘Best Original Song’. An emotional Lady Gaga took to the stage, along with Mark Ronson, Anthony Rossomando, and Andrew Wyatt.

“It’s not about winning, but what it’s about is not giving up. If you have a dream, fight for it,” said Lady Gaga in her acceptance speech.

Rami Malek Wins ‘Actor In a Leading Role’ For His Performance In 'Bohemian Rhapsody'

Rami Malek is the winner of the Academy Award for best actor for his performance in Bohemian Rhapsody.

Malek wins his first Oscar in his role as Queen frontman Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody. He was the only first-time nominee in the category.

The actor thanked his mother, who was in the audience Sunday, and also paid tribute to his later father, who he said didn't get to see him become a film star.

Rami Malek did not comment on the sexual harassment allegations against director Bryan Singer in his speech.

Olivia Colman Wins ‘Actress In a Leading Role’ For Her Performance In 'The Favourite'

Olivia Colman, who won the award for her performance in The Favourite, called Glenn Close her idol in her acceptance speech. She beat out Glenn Close, who was considered the front-runner going into Sunday's Oscars.

It's the first Oscar in her first nomination for Colman, who plays Queen Anne. She has won four British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards and two Golden Globes throughout her career.

She thanked The Favourite director Yorgos Lanthimos, as well as her co-stars Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz.

Colman also thanked her children, who she said she hoped were watching at home. She says, "This is not going to happen again."

Alfonso Cuarón Wins 'Best Director' Award

Alfonso Cuarón, who won the award for ‘Best Director’ for Roma, thanked the Academy for recognising indigenous talent.

It's the second time Cuarón has won an Oscar as best director. He previously won in 2014 for Gravity. His film Roma is based on his childhood in Mexico and the woman who raised him.

Cuarón has also won two Oscars Sunday night, as well as the best foreign language film for Mexico, its first.

The writer-director dedicated his speech to domestic workers, noting that tens of millions of them work around the world with any rights.

And 'Best Picture' Goes To...

Green Book! The film, which explores racial tensions in 1960s US, won the Academy Award for best picture.

The film from Universal Pictures stars Mahershala Ali as an African-American concert pianist in the 1960s and Viggo Mortensen as his driver. It won three Oscars on Sunday, including best supporting actor for Ali and best original screenplay.
