Neeraj Chopra Bags India's First-Ever Athletics Gold In The Olympics
Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra won India's first-ever athletics gold medal, with a best throw of 87.58 metres on his second attempt holding all the way through the finals.
This was also India's first gold in the Tokyo Olympics.
Two Czechs, Jakub Vadlejch with 86.67 metres and Vitezslav Vesely with 85.44 metres won silver and bronze respectively.
Panipat-born Chopra is also the first athlete representing India to have won gold in javelin throw at both the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games, both in 2018.
He became the first Indian competitor to win a junior world title in athletics when he claimed gold in javelin throw at the 2016 World Junior Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland.
The gold is India's seventh medal in the current campaign. The medal has also propelled India to rank 47 in the current medal tally, adding to the two silver and four bronze medals.
