“Every profession requires skills and labour, but in our profession, we save lives,” says Sita Khatik, an officer with the fire department of Jaipur.

One of the fearless female firefighters in the city, Sita has doused some of the most horrific fires and rescued stranded people.

Most female firefighters in Jaipur hail from small towns and villages of Rajasthan. For them, it is not easy to opt for an unconventional profession.

Yet, they all had the will to not only to convince their families but also successfully get through the tough exams and training.

Most of them still play two contrasting roles—one that of a courageous firefighter and the other of a homemaker.

Before joining the department, they had to undergo a rigorous training on how to use water hoses, scale ladders and rescue and evacuate people to safety from burning buildings.

These brave and determined women are setting new trends and changing mindsets.
