Sunil Chhetri speaks to the media after the Intercontinental Cup final.

I Cannot be Compared to the Likes of Lionel Messi: Sunil Chhetri

Fresh from netting eight goals in the title-winning Intercontinental Cup campaign in Mumbai, Sunil Chhetri spoke about his thoughts leading up to the twitter video that got thousands of retweets and lakhs of likes, but more importantly infused new life into Indian football's fandom.

I wasn’t thinking anything. If I would have thought something then I probably wouldn’t have posted the video. My mind was blank. It was just something that came to my mind after the match against Chinese Taipei. I didn’t run the video through my PR team. If I did, then they wouldn’t have allowed me to post the video, so I just did it. No one knew about it. I’m just happy with the traction. I was really happy to get all the support.

Chhetri, who equalled Lionel Messi’s record of 64 goals to become the joint second-highest scorer in international football among active players, said that he cannot be compared with the likes of Lionel Messi.

To be very honest, I don’t take the comparisons too seriously. There is no comparison, they are of a different level. I am just very happy that I have scored 64 international goals (same as Lionel Messi). I am honoured to have got an opportunity to play for my country in over 100 games.

The Indian football captain expressed that he is looking forward to watch Lionel Messi in the FIFA World Cup.

I’m excited to see every team play against every team. Because the world’s top stars are playing the tournament. But if you want one name then I’m excited to watch Lionel Messi.
