Where the Rich Are in the U.S. Midwest: 50 Richest Zip Codes

(Bloomberg) -- Prosperity lurks in corners of the Rust Belt.

Eight of the top 10 richest zip codes in the U.S. Midwest are in the greater Chicago area, based on data compiled by Bloomberg, with the village of Kenilworth, Illinois, 60043, leading the pack by a wide margin.

Nationally, Kenilworth, a North Shore suburb where the median price of a home for sale is about $1.5 million, is ranked No. 8. Two years after the community was founded in 1889, lots were listed at $60 an acre, according to the website of the Kenilworth Historical Society.

Ladue, Missouri, 63124, a St. Louis suburb, is the only other Midwestern zip code ranked in the top 100 nationwide at No. 48. Even so, the annual income Laude is about $350,000 less than Kenlworth.

Bloomberg evaluated IRS data for zip codes with more than 200 tax returns as of the 2015 filing season, and with 500 residential households according to the latest Census tally. The U.S. Census Bureau Midwest region consists of 12 states in the north central United States.
