CWG 2018 | Day 5: Indian Mixed Badminton Team Win First CWG Gold

India’s medal tally is expected to rise further on the fifth day with about 10 medal events in badminton, table tennis, swimming, shooting and weightlifting scheduled to take place.

The Indian badminton team will finally have a chance to reward themselves for the consistent performances in the first few outings, as they will play the medal match on Monday, 9 April against Malaysia.

In shooting, there are three medal events – men’s skeet shooting, women’s 10m air rifle shooting, and men’s 10m air pistol shooting. However, the shooters need to go through the qualification stage first in order to get to the final event.

There will be four medal events in weightlifting on Monday, with Indian lifters performing in all four – 105 kg men, 90 kg women, +105 kg men, +90kg women.

The men’s table tennis team will face Singapore in the semifinals and will proceed to the final (gold medal) event if they defeat Singapore.

Indian swimmer Srihari Natrajan will also be looking for a medal on Monday in his 200m backstroke event. Natrajan will also have to qualify for the final event first in order to win a medal.

More sports where we will see Indians in action are boxing, which will see matches in two categories – men’s 52-kg and 60-kg categories, and high jump in athletics. However, there are no medal events slated for these two sports.

Commonwealth Championships gold medallist Pardeep is one of the favourites to add to India's medal tally. But it will be an uphill task. In the fray are defending champion David Katoatau from Kiribati, Glasgow and New Delhi silver medallist, Stanislav Chalaev from New Zealand. Also in medal contention are Samoa’s Sanele Mao who finished second behind Pardeep at the Commonwealth Championships last year and England's Owen Boxall, who was fourth in Glasgow.

The Indian men's table tennis team will take on Singapore in the semi-final. The men have been dominant at the Games, with a hat-trick of 3-0 wins on the way to the semi-finals. On the other hand, Singapore were stretched to the limit by Canada in the quarter-final. Expect it to be an exciting semi-final.

Om Prakash has equalled the qualification record in men’s 10 m air pistol set by compatriot Omkar Singh back at the Delhi Games in 2010 with shots of 96, 96, 98, 99, 96 and 99.

22-year-old Om Prakash and Jitu Rai qualify for the men’s 10 m air pistol final. Om Prakash shot an impressive 584 points to top the qualification round with a series of 96, 96, 98, 99, 96 and 99. Jitu Rai was fourth best in the qualification round with shots of 98, 92, 94, 96, 95 and 95.

Let’s hope Om Prakash carries on the momentum in the final round and Jitu Rai betters his qualification performance for podium finishes for India!

The men’s 10 m air pistol final will take place from 7.30 pm.

After a first failed attempt. Pardeep successfully lifts 148 kg in his second lift. Pardeep looked tense but in the end he finished the lift quite comfortably.

Sharath thumps Shao Feng 11-5, 11-5, 11-4 to make it 1-1 for India against Singapore., after Harmeet Desai lost 11-9, 11-5, 11-8 to the experienced Ning Gao.

The doubles pair of Sathiyan Gnanasekaran and Harmeet Desai now in action against Xue Jie Pang and Shao Feng Ethan Poh .

Pardeep Singh lifts 152 kgs in his third attempt to be joint second with Ghana's Richmond Osfaro and England's Owen Boxall after the snatch event. Samoa's Sanele Mao takes a two kilo lead with a lift of 154 kgs.

India’s Hima Das, running in her first 400m international competition, booked her semi-final berth clocking a comfortable 52.11 second.

MR Poovamma was fifth in her heats in 53.72 and was left hoping for some luck to progress as one of the four fastest losers. That was not to be as her time was only the fifth fastest among those who did not qualify automatically.

Srihari finishes sixth in heat 2 of the men’s 200m backstroke event, thereby failing to qualify for the final.

India lead 2-1 in the semi-final of the men's team event against Singapore after the doubles pair of Sathiyan Gnansekaran and Harmeet Desai beat Xue Jie Pang and Shao Feng Ethan Poh 8-11, 11-7, 11-9, 11-8.

Now, Sathiyan will take on Ning Gao in his singles match.

In the men’s high jump qualifying, Tejaswin Shankar has cleared his first attempt of 2.10. While automatic qualifying is at 2.27m, at least 12 best performers will advance to the final.

Tejaswin, who set the National Record with a 2.28m jump last month, needs a second attempt to clear 2.15m.

In the clean and jerk category, Pardeep Singh comfortably lifts 200 kg in his first attempt.

India's Apurvi Chandela breaks her own Games qualification record of 415.6 she had set in Glasgow in the women’s with a score of 423.2

Pardeep Singh made a gallant attempt to outperform Samoa’s Sanele Mao but had to settle for silver in the men’s 105 kg weightlifting event with a total of 352 kg.

The 23-year-old from Jalandhar, Commonwealth Championship winner last year, lifted 209 kg in clean and jerk to put pressure on his rival only for it to be ruled a no lift.

The Samoan held a 2 kg lead after lifting 154 kg in snatch. He went close, raising Indian hopes of another gold, was not able to hold it.

In the end, he had to be satisfied with having beaten England’s Owen Boxall and run the Samoan, who finished with 360 kg close.

Apurvi Chandela breaks her own CWG qualification record of 415.6 by shooting 423.2. Apurvi will be joined by Mehuli Ghosh who shot 413.7 to qualify as the fifth-best shooter.

The final will be played from 9 am.

India’s Jitu Rai clinches gold in men’s 10 m air pistol event with a new CWG record of 235.1 points.

Om Prakash, who topped the qualification, wins bronze after shooting 214.3 points. In the qualification round, Om had shot an impressive 584 points to top equal qualification record.

Sharath Kamal beats Singapore’s Xue Jie Pang 11-5, 11-5, 12-10 to help India reach the final. India beat Singapore 3-2 and are in contention to add to the gold won by the women on Sunday.

Commonwealth Youth Games silver medallist Gaurav Solanki wins with a unanimous decision going in his favour against Ghana’s Akimos Annang Ampiah in his 52 kg round of 16 bout.

Apurvi Chandela and Mehuli Ghosh compete in the final of the women's 10 metre air rifle event.

Apurvi set a new CWG record of 423.2 to clinch the top spot in the qualifying stage. She beat her own previous CWG record of 415.6 which was set at CWG 2014.

Ghosh registered 413.7 to finish fifth in the qualification stage.

Apurvi Chandela was in a great position to win a silver medal but two shots of 9.9 and 9.4 pushed her to the third place with a total score of 225.3.

India’s Mehuli Ghosh and Singapore’s Martina Lindsay Veloso finished with the same score of 247.2. In the sudden death round, Veloso shot 10.3 to take the gold, while Ghosh shot 9.9 to settle for a silver medal.

India’s Manish Kaushik beats Trinidad and Tobago’s Michael Alexander 4-0 to qualify for the quarter-final of the men's 60 kg category.

Weightlifter Lalchhanhimi finishes eighth in the 90 kg category with a total lift of 194 kg.

Weightlifter Purnima Pandey finishes sixth in +90 kg Category with a total lift of 212 kg.

Smit Singh finishes last in the men’s skeet finals. He records a score of 15.

In the singles match between Kidambi Srikanth and Lee Chong Wei, Srikanth takes a 1-0 lead with a 21-17 victory.

Srikanth is inching India closer to a 2-0 lead with some fantastic movements in the singles match against Lee Chong Wei. He currently leads 17-12 in the second game.
