The Congress-JD(S) coalition on Tuesday lost the trust vote in Karnataka Assembly, paving the way for the Bharatiya Janata Party to stake claim to form the next government in the state.

While the Speaker is yet to take a decision on the resignations submitted the rebel MLAs, BJP MP Rajeev Chandrasekhar said the party will stake claim to form the government and there was no question of another election. “There is a political vacuum and the BJP, after consulting with its leaders, will decide on a strategy and offer to set up a government in Karnataka.”
He, however, pointed out that the Congress party will go to the courts to have a decision in its favour. “You can’t ignore the Congress’s inherent and deep talent to use the court to destabilise and muddy the waters.”
Meanwhile, Brijesh Kalappa of the Congress said their next strategy is to have the rebel MLAs disqualified by the Speaker. “We have already asked for a disqualification and it is the Speaker’s decision,” Kalappa said. “The rebel MLAs will have to face elections in the next five to six months and we will participate fully and demonstrate our strength.”
