UK Says Big Issues Remain as Irish Backstop Snarls Brexit Talks
(Bloomberg) -- U.K. government says the Irish backstop is the main obstacle in Brexit talks, as the European Union is continuing to insist on a proposal Britain has long called unacceptable.
- U.K. remains "confident" of securing a Brexit deal this fall
- U.K. government spokesman James Slack briefs reporters
- EU continues to insist on the possibility of a customs border in the Irish Sea, dividing Northern Ireland from mainland Britain. May and Parliament consider that unacceptable
- "We need to be able to look the British people in the eye and to be able to say the backstop is a temporary solution," Slack says. The U.K. cannot be "stuck permanently in a single customs territory and unable to do meaningful trade deals.”
