U.S. Midterm Vote Unlikely to Ease Russia Tensions, Kremlin Says
(Bloomberg) -- Midterm elections in the U.S. offer little prospect of easing tensions in relations with Russia, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
“We should not be deceived and believe that this will bring some clarity,” Peskov told reporters Tuesday on a conference call. “So far, there are no definite trends toward normalizing relations.”
Members of Congress from both parties have pressed for tougher sanctions on Russia to punish it for election meddling and may revisit the issue of new restrictions soon. U.S. officials have accused Russia of meddling in the 2016 presidential campaign to try to help Donald Trump to win, and of attempting to interfere in the midterm contests taking place on Tuesday. The Kremlin has denied the accusations.
