(Bloomberg) -- U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced he is to marry his partner Carrie Symonds and that the couple are expecting a baby later this year.

The announcement comes amid speculation over the reasons why Johnson has been largely absent from the public eye in recent weeks, despite floods hitting large parts of the country.

“The Prime Minister and Miss Symonds are very pleased to announce their engagement and that they are expecting a baby in the early summer,” a spokesperson for the couple said.

Johnson, 55, and Symonds, 31, were the first unmarried couple officially to live together in Downing Street when he became prime minister last July. Johnson has been married twice before. In 2018 he split from his second wife Marina Wheeler, with whom he had four children. They agreed a divorce settlement earlier this month.

When Johnson was standing for the leadership of the Conservative Party last year, police were called to the home he and Symonds shared after reports from neighbors of a row.
