Twitter Inc. said an account linked to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s personal website was hacked on Thursday.

The hacked handle, @narendramodi_in has been active since May 2011 with over 2.5 million followers. The handle has since been restored, the social media platform said.

“We’re aware of this activity and have taken steps to secure the compromised account,” a Twitter spokesperson said in an emailed statement. “We are actively investigating the situation. At this time, we are not aware of additional accounts being impacted.”

The prime minister’s office did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment.

Modi maintains two other Twitter accounts -- one as India’s prime minister @PMOIndia and another personal account @narendramodi.

Hackers asked users to make cryptocurrency donations for Covid-19 to the Prime Minister’s Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations Fund, NDTV.com reported.

Hackers had in July hijacked handles held by Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden, former President Barack Obama and billionaires Elon Musk and Bill Gates seeking digital currency.
