Trump Reaches 49% Approval in Gallup Poll, His Highest Ever

(Bloomberg) -- Nearly half of U.S. voters approve of Donald Trump’s performance as president, according to Gallup, the most since he took office.

Trump’s approval rating reached 49% in Gallup’s latest poll of American sentiment toward the nation’s leader, as his support increased both within the Republican Party and among voters who describe themselves as independents. Trump’s high-water mark came as the Senate prepares to likely acquit him in his impeachment trial.

About 50% of registered voters said they disapprove of Trump’s performance. He enjoys the support of 94% of Republicans and 42% of independents, Gallup said. That’s the most support he’s ever enjoyed within his party and ties for his highest level of support among independents.

But Trump’s approval among Democrats plunged to just 7%, yielding an 87 percentage-point difference in opinion between members of the nation’s two predominant political parties -- the widest partisan divide Gallup has ever recorded for any president, it said in a web post.

Trump has racked up a number of achievements both at home and overseas since the New Year, including the killing of a top Iranian general that the U.S. government considered a terrorist, the signing of a so-called “phase one” trade deal with China and congressional approval of his revision of the North American Free Trade Agreement.
