Terry McAuliffe Says He'll Decide on White House Run by March 31
(Bloomberg) -- Former Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe may soon be another addition to the field of Democrats running for the White House in 2020, and said he’d represent a pragmatic choice with a bipartisan record.
“I’ve said I’d make a decision by March 31. I’ve been talking to other candidates. I want to see what the positions are out there. I’m going through the process. I’ve outreached to over 400 people,” McAuliffe said Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union.” “I’d like to do it.”
The former chairman of the Democratic National Committee and ally of Bill and Hillary Clinton said there needs to be “a Democrat running for president who can actually get things done and show results.”
Among the Democrats in the race to take on President Donald Trump in 2020 are a handful of U.S senators, including Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, Kamala Harris of California and Cory Booker of New Jersey, plus Julian Castro, the former mayor of San Antonio, Texas. Several others are said to be considering jumping in.
Against that field, McAuliffe, 61, would stress his track record of working across the aisle during four years in the Virginia executive mansion on policies he termed progressive but economically focused.
“I have very aspirational goals but I also temper that with what is reality,” he said. “I had a very Republican legislature. I got over 70 percent of my governor’s administration bills passed. I worked together.”
