Senegal President Self-Isolates After Contact With Case

Senegal President in Quarantine After Contact With Covid Case

Senegalese President Macky Sall will be self-isolating for the next two weeks after coming into contact with a person who tested Covid-19 positive, the presidency said.

Sall, 58, has tested negative for the disease, it said in a statement on Twitter on Thursday.

French President Emmanuel Macron was expected in Dakar on June 30, a Senegalese presidency spokesman said by phone. Macron will not be visiting Senegal on a planned regional trip, an Elysee official said. A Senegalese stop had never been confirmed, according to the official.

The government eased movement restrictions at the beginning of the month after two days of widespread protests against measures meant to help curb the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

Sall announced schools would reopen on June 2, and had to backtrack on that very day after some teachers tested positive for the disease. The country, which has 6,129 reported coronavirus cases, including 93 deaths, still has a 6-hour nighttime curfew in place, with air and land borders remaining closed.
