Proud Boys’ Tarrio Proposes $1 Million Bond in Jan. 6 Riot Case

Enrique Tarrio, the former chairman of the right-wing Proud Boys group, proposed putting up a $1 million bond to be released to home detainment pending trial on Jan. 6 conspiracy charges.

Tarrio, who was arrested March 7 at his home in Miami, has a “multitude of family members” willing to help pay his bond and even put up their homes as collateral, he said in a Monday night court filing in Washington. He suggested his travel be restricted to Washington for hearings and that he submit to GPS monitoring and be barred from using social media or any devices with internet access.

Charged with conspiring with other Proud Boys to obstruct Congress on Jan. 6, 2021, as it was certifying Joe Biden’s victory over Donald Trump in the 2020 presidential election, Tarrio also argued he should be released because the government doesn’t have evidence he planned to enter the U.S. Capitol.

Tarrio wasn’t at the Capitol during the riot because he had been arrested after burning a Black Lives Matter flag belonging to a historic Washington church during street clashes leading up to the insurrection. Federal prosecutors claim he tried to delete his communications after the breach.

Tarrio, who resigned from his national role in the Proud Boys after the riot for reasons he said were unrelated to it, acknowledges that laws were broken as the mob of Trump supporters breached the Capitol, injuring police officers and forcing lawmakers to flee.

“Since the January 6 events, Mr. Tarrio has stated that he believes the individuals were committing a law violation of some sort or another,” his lawyer has said.
