Polish Deputy Minister Urges Presidential Election to Be Delayed

(Bloomberg) -- Poland’s presidential election can’t be held on May 10 as planned, a deputy minister said, becoming the first government official to openly voice such a possibility.

“I understand my colleagues are trying to make holding elections on May 10 possible,” Deputy Science Minister Wojciech Maksymowicz said Monday. “But it’s nature that rules here. I have no doubt that these discussions are about something that won’t take place.”

The Law & Justice party -- whose ally, incumbent Andrzej Duda, is seeking a second term -- is pushing to hold the vote even as the coronavirus pandemic spreads. His main challenger, Malgorzata Kidawa-Blonska, called on voters to boycott the ballot and suspended her campaign at the weekend.
