Norway’s Police Arrests Norwegian Citizen for Espionage

Norway’s security police arrested a Norwegian citizen in Oslo on Saturday and charged him with handing information to a foreign power.

The indictment is based on meetings the suspect had with Russian intelligence officers, NTB reported, citing a police official. The man, an employee of classification firm DNV GL AS, denied the accusation, his lawyer said, according to the news agency.

“The man is accused of having handed information to a foreign state that could harm basic national interests,” the Norwegian Police Security Service said in a post on Twitter earlier on Monday.

DNV confirmed the man was an employee at the company, but said further information about him would be handled by the police. The case is a “very serious matter,” and DNV will cooperate with police so they can handle it “in a good way,” spokesman Per Wiggo Richardsen said by phone.
