Nigeria's Lower House Proposes Minimum Wage of 30,000 Naira

(Bloomberg) -- Nigeria’s House of Representatives recommended increasing the minimum monthly wage by 67 percent to 30,000 naira ($83).

The lower house agreed on the proposal -- which still requires the consent of the Senate and President Muhammadu Buhari before becoming law -- during a session in Abuja, the capital, on Tuesday. The Senate is not scheduled to meet again until Feb. 19, three days after Nigeria holds presidential and parliamentary elections.

The presidency said this month it would ask parliament to agree to a minimum wage of 27,000 naira for employees in the private sector and of state governments, while federal government workers would get one of 30,000 naira.
