Nigeria's Buhari Says He'll ‘Work Even Harder’ in Second Term

(Bloomberg) -- Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari said he plans to “work even harder” during his second term, listing security, improving the economy and upgrading infrastructure among his top priorities.

“This is my last lap,” Buhari said in a statement from his office Wednesday. “I will try and work even harder than I have done. I assure you that I will not let you down.”

The 76-year-old leader decisively beat his main rival, Atiku Abubakar, in a Feb. 23 election to secure a final four-year term.

After a contraction in 2016, the economy of Africa’s biggest oil producer is still recovering and the nation faces several security challenges, including from Boko Haram and Islamic State militants in the northeast.

Nigeria, a federation of 36 states, will on Saturday hold elections for state governors and members of local assemblies.
