New Jersey Reports 742 Confirmed Coronavirus Cases, Up From 427

(Bloomberg) -- New Jersey’s confirmed coronavirus cases rose 74% to 742 in the last day as the state ramped up testing, Governor Phil Murphy said.

Four more deaths were attributed to the virus, for a total of nine. Among them were two siblings and their elderly mother.

Murphy, saying he expects the number of cases in the state to reach “the many thousands,” also ordered most personal-care business to close starting at 8 p.m., because they require employees to work in close proximity to their customers. The affected businesses include barber shops and hair salons, nail and eyelash shops, spas and tattoo parlors.

Primary elections scheduled for June 2 will continue as scheduled, Murphy said at a news conference in Trenton, though he announced changes for some local contests to avoid person-to-person contact. He also said he would order the suspension of evictions.
