Modi 2.0 Takes Shape

Narendra Modi has been sworn in as India's prime minister for a second consecutive term. President Ram Nath Kovind administered the oath of office 57 ministers of the new government, including first-timer Amit Shah, at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. The Missing Ministers

Some former Union ministers have not been given a second stint in the new Modi government.

  • Sushma Swaraj, who was the external affairs minister, was present in the audience today but wasn't sworn-in as a union minister.
  • Rajyavardhan Rathore, who served as a Minister of State for Ministry, was given a miss.
  • Maneka Gandhi, who was earlier the Women and Child Affairs Minister, found no place in Modi 2.0.
  • Jagat Prakash Nadda too did not make it to the union cabinet this time. He had served as the Minister of Health and Family Welfare.
  • Jayant Sinha, the former Minister of State for Civil Aviation, did not make the cut either. His father, Yashwant Sinha has been a vocal critic of the Modi government.
  • Former Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had opted out of the Modi government citing health concerns.
  • Former Water Affairs Minister Uma Bharati was also given a miss.

BIMSTEC Leaders Meet PM Modi, President Ram Nath Kovind

At the end of the swearing-in ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, the leaders of BIMSTEC nations met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Ram Nath Kovind. The guests will now head to a dinner hosted by the President.

Nitish Kumar Attends Ceremony

Janata Dal (United) leader and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar also arrived at the Rashtrapati Bhavan saying that the JD(U) will not be a part of the new Narendra Modi government. The JD(U) and the Bharatiya Janata Party had swept the Bihar Lok Sabha elections.

Kumar said that they are “fully” with the NDA and are “working together”.

Gujarat BJP Chief Congratulates Shah On Joining Cabinet

Gujarat BJP PResident Jitu Vaghani has congratulated Amit Shah on becoming part of Narendra Modi’s union cabinet.

“Had a courtesy meeting with our mentor Amit Shah and gave my best wishes to him on his inclusion as a strong member of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi's council of ministers,” he tweeted.

Modi, Amit Shah Give Final Shape To Cabinet At Modi's Home

Ministers selected for oath of office will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi at his residence at 4:30 p.m. today, shortly before the swearing-in ceremony, sources told PTI.

Earlier in the morning, the prime minister held a final round of consultations with Bharatiya Janata Party President Amit Shah to give shape to his council of ministers before sending the list to the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

As the party geared up for the celebrations, Shah's Akbar Road residence was decked up. BJP General Secretary (Organisation) Ram Lal was among those who met Shah at his residence.

Modi and Shah have held several rounds of discussions in the last two days ahead of government formation.

Shah, the architect of BJP's victory of 303 seats in the Lok Sabha, is believed to be among those who will join the Modi cabinet and is tipped to get either Home or Finance, sources told PTI. Other senior party leaders such as Rajnath Singh, Nitin Gadkari, Nirmala Sitharaman, Piyush Goyal, Narendra Singh Tomar, Prakash Javadekar, Ravi Shankar Prasad, Dharmendra Pradhan and Smriti Irani are also likely to join the second Modi government after being its members in its first avatar.

The others tipped to get a ministerial berth include Sadananda Gowda, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, Jayant Sinha, Giriraj Singh, Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, Thawarchand Gehlot, Dilip Ghosh, Jitendra Singh and Purshottam Rupala.

Sources said Modi government 2.0 is likely to showcase the party's newfound strength in different regions.

NDA Allies To Get One Cabinet Berth Each?

BJP allies like Shiv Sena, Janata Dal (United), All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, Lok Janshakti Party, Akali Dal and Apna Dal are set to be represented in the government.

Each NDA ally is likely to get one cabinet berth, sources said, according to a PTI report.

The Shiv Sena has confirmed its leader Arvind Sawant, who defeated Congress heavyweight Milind Deora from Mumbai, will be its nominee in the council of ministers.

Akali Dal leader Harsimrat Badal, who was Food Processing Minister in the earlier government, will be in the new council of ministers as well, sources said.

The Lok Janshakti Party has already passed a resolution recommending its president Ram Vilas Paswan as the party's representative in the Modi government.

The Apna Dal's Anupriya Patel is likely to be in the council of ministers.

The JD-U is likely to nominate either Ram Nath Thakur or Santosh Kushwaha, sources said.

Arun Jaitley Opts Out Of New Cabinet

Arun Jaitley, finance minister in Narendra Modi’s first cabinet, urged the prime minister in a letter yesterday to not include him in the new government for the time being because of health reasons.

Jaitley said he has had some serious health challenges in the last 18 months and needs to concentrate on his treatment and health.

I am writing to you to formally request you that I should be allowed a reasonable time for myself, my treatment and my health and, therefore, not be a part of any responsibility, for the present, in the new government.

Hours later, Modi drove to Jaitley's official residence in New Delhi and was with him for sometime, officials said.

Modi Set To Be Sworn In As India's PM For Another Five Years

Narendra Modi will take an oath to serve as India’s Prime Minister for another term today at 7 p.m. in the forecourt of the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

President Ram Nath Kovind will administer the oath of office and secrecy to 68-year-old Modi and his ministerial colleagues.

The ceremony is expected to be a grand affair with about 8,000 guests, including leaders from the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation countries, opposition leaders Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi, state chief ministers, corporate leaders and film stars.

Meanwhile, the Indian National Congress has decided to not send spokespersons on television debates for a month, as the party faces a leadership crisis with Rahul Gandhi insisting on his resignation as its president.
