Modi Wave Is Waning, Says Prominent Supporter Tavleen Singh
Ardent Modi supporter attributes the turning tide to lacklustre performance of BJP CMs in populous states.
Senior journalist and columnist Tavleen Singh has been a prominent supporter of Prime Minister Modi’s policies since he stormed to power in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls. Singh now sees the Modi wave waning.
“In 2013, I noticed a wave for Narendra Modi long before anyone in Delhi did,” said the veteran columnist in an interview to Bloomberg Quint. Singh attributes the turning tide to the lacklustre performance of chief ministers of the Bharatiya Janata Party in populous states like Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh, the lack of an astute political team and the rollout of the Goods and Services Tax.
“It was a big mistake to put Yogi Adityanath in charge of UP where there are 35 seats where Muslim votes can tilt the results,” Singh said.
In 2014, the hope of a better future fueled the National Democratic Alliance’s massive mandate. Modi was the mascot for ‘acche din’ (a better future). Four years later disappointment has started setting in, she added. “More and more at the rural level are saying they hoped there would be jobs, clean water, delivery of public service under Modi.”
