Narendra Modi took oath for the second straight time as the prime minister of India at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on Thursday after a massive electoral victory in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. 24 cabinet ministers and 33 ministers of state were also sworn in by President Ram Nath Kovind. Amit Shah, too, took oath as a cabinet minister for the first time. Arun Jaitley and Sushma Swaraj, among a few others, however, weren’t part of the new Modi cabinet.

Here’s a quick look at the new Modi cabinet.

Little NDA Representation

The BJP won 303 of the 353 Lok Sabha seats that the National Democratic Alliance had won in the general election. That’s reflected in the composition of Modi’s new council of ministers. There’s no representation from the Janata Dal (United). While only one Shiv Sena MP, Arvind Sawant, has found place in the Union cabinet, Ram Vilas Paswan of the Lok Jan Shakti Party and Shiromani Akali Dal’s Harsimrat Kaur Badal are the other NDA leaders in the Union Cabinet.

There is only one minister of state from an NDA ally—Ramdas Athawale of the Republican Party of India (A).

The Missing Ministers

Arun Jaitley, former External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and former Water and Sanitation Minister Uma Bharati weren’t included in Modi’s new council of ministers. To be clear, Jaitley had requested Modi to keep him out of the new government due to health issues. Bharati and Swaraj, too, chose to opt out due to ill health.
