Hours after assuming office as the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Kamal Nath cleared the proposal of waiving farm loans up to Rs 2 lakh as promised by Congress president Rahul Gandhi ahead of assembly polls.
Congress leader Kamal Nath was sworn in as the 18th chief minister of Madhya Pradesh in Bhopal’s Jamburi Maidan on Monday, 17 December.
Governor Anandiben Patel, who administered the oath of office to Nath, had, on Friday 14 December, invited Nath to form the new government in the state.
In a show of Opposition solidarity, Congress President Rahul Gandhi, former PM Manmohan Singh, National Conference President Farooq Abdullah, Andhra Pradesh CM and TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu, and NCP chief Sharad Pawar were present at the swearing-in ceremony in Bhopal. Congress leaders Digvijaya Singh and Mallikarjun Kharge also attended the event.

Kamal Nath Initiates Process For Farm Loan Waivers
On the day of taking oath as the chief minister of Madhya Pradesh, Kamal Nath has initiated the process to waive off farmers' loans.
The Congress party had promised to write off farm loans within 10 days of assuming office.

Kamal Nath took the oath of office as the Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister on Monday, 17 December.
The Congress had on Thursday, 13 December, named Nath, the nine-time Lok Sabha member from Chhindwara, as the CM-desginated after hours of hectic parleys between party chief Rahul Gandhi and senior party leaders.
Nath, who has previously held several portfolios in the Union Cabinet, was appointed the Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee president on 26 April. He played a key leader in steering the party to a win in the 28 November Assembly polls.

Not Hungry for a Post: Jyotiraditya Scindia
A day after the Congress party chose MP state unit chief Kamal Nath as the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Jyotiraditya Scindia, who was also considered to be in the race for the chief minister's post told NDTV, “I have abided by the decision and it is the gospel for me.”
Responding to a question on his equation with Nath, Scindia added, “I don’t have hunger for a post and that gets demonstrated when you are in a position of cross-roads.”
Taking a swipe at the BJP, Scindia said that despite winning three of the five state elections, the Congress party will not take anything for granted and will prepare for the 2019 elections. He also said that the party will sit together and decide the face of the Opposition party for the Lok Sabha polls.
Rooting for Gandhi, Scindia said, “Rahul Gandhi should be the Prime Ministerial candidate for the country.”

Independents Hold Key for Congress in MP
The Congress will have to enlist the support of at least one of the four independents or of the lone Samajwadi Party (SP) candidate elected in Madhya Pradesh to form the next government in the state.
As of 5.30 am on Wednesday, the results for 225 of the 230 seats have been declared. The Congress has won 112 and is leading in three seats. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has won 113 seats. The Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) has won one seat and leading in one more. The Samajwadi Party (SP) has won one seat and Independent candidates have won four.
Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has won from his traditional Budhni seat by a margin of 58,999 votes, defeating former Union minister and senior Congress leader Arun Yadav.
Counting for the election, held on November 28, began at 8 am Tuesday.
Independent Candidates Support Us, We Have Clear Majority: Congress
Congress’ Kamal Nath early on Wednesday, 12 December, said that they have secured the support of Independent candidates and claimed that the party has clear majority in the state.
He was accompanied by senior leaders Jyotiraditya Madhavrao Scindia and Digvijaya Singh at the late night press conference.
“With utmost happiness, I wish to inform you that Congress has won clear majority. We have written a letter to the governor to invite us so that we can prove our majority before her,” Nath said, as per ANI.
The Congress called itself the "single largest party" and said all independents will support it.
