Rahul Gandhi Takes Charge As Congress President

Delivering his first address as party president, Rahul Gandhi said the Congress Party is committed to defending the voice of every single Indian. “We will never ever allow the democratic values of even one of them to be silenced,” Gandhi added.

Here are the other highlights from Rahul Gandhi’s speech:

  • Many of us are disillusioned by politics of our time, politics is devoid of kindness and truth today.
  • Politics is being used to crush the people and not uplift them.
  • Politics belongs to the people, but today politics is not being used for people.

Congress took India to the 21st century, but the Prime Minister today is taking us back to the medieval times, Gandhi added.

Today, people from the BJP are trying to spread violence in the country. The only force that can stop them is the Congress.

Congress' Mission Is To Protect India's Values: Sonia Gandhi

Addressing the party members present at the headquarters for the “last time”, Sonia Gandhi said, “twenty years ago, when I was elected as Congress President, I was nervous about this new role. I was anxious on how to uphold the heritage of the party. I became part of this family during revolutionary times.”

Handing over the charge of Congress president to her son Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi said the party should set its house in order and be ready for any sacrifice to stop the communal forces in the country.

Here are the other highlights from Sonia Gandhi’s speech:

  • India is facing challenges unlike any in the past.
  • India’s core constitutional values are under threat.
  • We have lost state elections. But we are not the ones to be afraid.
  • Our fight is for the soul of this nation.
  • Our mission and destination is to protect the values of this country.
  • We are seeing the daily attacks on the diversity of this country. These are attacks on our freedom of speech and expression.
This is a moral fight. To win this fight, we have to be ready to make any sacrifice.

The Congress' Central Election Authority handed him over the certificate of his elevation to the top post during a grand event held at the lawns of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) headquarters in Delhi.

While handing over the certificate, CEA chairman Mullappally Ramachandran termed the moment as "historic".

There was chaos outside the AICC headquarters where the Congress workers gathered in large numbers for the event, making it difficult even for the senior party leaders to enter the venue.
