Prime Minister Defends CAA; Says His Government Kept Prices Under Check

Amid anti-Citizenship Amendment Act protests in the country, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday accused the Congress and the Left of inciting people at protest sites while making it clear that the Act will neither impact any Indian citizen nor harm minority interests.

Replying to a debate on Motion of Thanks to the President's Address in Lok Sabha, Modi also attacked the Congress for its politics in the last seven decades, saying the party's politics of last 70 years has been such that no Congress leader can be self-sufficient.

"I want to clearly state that with the CAA coming, there will be no impact on any citizen of India, practising any faith. CAA does not affect any Indian, it doesn't harm minority interests," he said in his more than 90-minute long reply.

The motion was later passed by the voice vote.

Working To Boost Connectivity Through Infrastructure: PM Modi

Infrastructure will be one of the things that that will drive India's progress, according to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. "In the earlier days, infrastructure creation brought "economic opportunities" for a select few. We have made this sector transparent and are working to boost connectivity," Modi said.

“We have kept the fiscal deficit in check. Price rise is also under check and there is macro-economic stability,” PM Modi said, adding that the vision of the current government is greater investment, better infrastructure, increased value addition and maximum job creation.

Things have changed now after the Northeast was ignored for years, according to PM Modi. :The Northeast is becoming a growth engine. Great work has been done in so many sectors. Ministers and officials are regularly visiting the region,” PM Modi said in the Parliament.

PM Modi Highlights The Achievements Of The Current Government

Prime Minister Narendra Modi started the motion of thanks on President’s address by highlighting the achievements of the current government.

“If we worked as per the old ways then-Ram Janmabhoomi issue would have remained unresolved. Kartarpur Sahib corridor would not be made. There would be no India-Bangladesh land agreement,” Modi said.

If we had worked according to old ways and thoughts then-Article 370 would never have been abrogated.Muslim women would have kept suffering due to Triple Talaq, Modi added.

PM Modi To Reply To The Motion Of Thanks On The President's Address Around 12 p.m.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will reply to the Motion of Thanks to the President’s address in the Lok Sabha around 12 p.m. today, according to a tweet from the Prime Minister’s Office.

President Ram Nath Kovind had addressed the joint sitting of both houses of Parliament on Jan. 31, ahead of the presentation of the Union budget.

The Trinamool Congress had moved amendments seeking changes in the President’s address, saying it did not give the real picture of the economy. “President’s speech has not mentioned about the growth of the economy. It is the first time in the history that Reserve Bank of India has changed the growth forecast three times,” said Trinamool Congress MP Sukhendu Sekhar Ray.

Speaking against the Motion of Thanks on the President’s address, Nationalist Congress Party leader Supriya Sule said the Modi government was hiding its economic crisis behind its “divisive agenda”.

“India is persecuted and completely polarised today. Caste and creed has reached our homes. The entire country has been polarised, either one is with CAA or against it,” she said.

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party defended the government’s decisions on Jammu and Kashmir and the Citizenship Amendment Act, saying they have strengthened the nation and democracy, and slammed the opposition for backing protests like in Shaheen Bagh.
