Karnataka Assembly Speaker KR Ramesh Kumar announced his resignation after the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa won the trust vote in the House.

"I have decided to relieve myself from this office... I have decided to resign," Kumar said said, handing over his resignation letter to Deputy Speaker Krishna Reddy.

Kumar had on Sunday disqualified 14 more rebel MLAs, in addition to the three earlier.

During his 14-month long tenure as the Speaker, Kumar said, he had worked according to his "conscience" and in accordance with the Constitution. "I have upheld the dignity of office to the best of my ability.”

Kumar’s resignation came soon after Yediyurappa won the one-line confidence motion by voice vote and the Karnataka Assembly passed the Appropriation Bill.
