Javid Calls for Rebel Tories to Be Allowed Rejoin Party

(Bloomberg) -- Conservative Party lawmakers expelled after voting against the government in Tuesday’s Brexit vote should be given a route to rejoin, Chancellor of the Exchequer Sajid Javid told LBC radio on Thursday. Javid’s comments came after The Sun reported that several senior ministers, led by Michael Gove, confronted Prime Minister Boris Johnson at a cabinet meeting this week calling for the decision to be reversed.

Thirteen of the 21 Tories expelled from the party serve constituencies that voted to remain in the European Union in 2016. However, most of the lawmakers are now in favor of delivering on the referendum result, and only voted against the government because of their opposition to a no-deal Brexit. Just four voted against Theresa May’s Withdrawal Agreement on March 29.
