Italy’s Vacancies Jump as Economic Recovery Accelerates

Vacancies in Italy’s labor market spiked in the second quarter, adding to signals that the economic recovery picked up pace in the first half of the year. The increase in unfilled jobs to more than 480,000 shows that -- like elsewhere in Europe -- companies are struggling to find enough workers even as the number of employed persons remains well below the pre-pandemic high. The rise in vacancies comes just as the government prepares to reform its welfare system, including the so-called citizenship’s income, a controversial and costly unemployment benefit.
