Italy's Populists Prepare to Take Power: What Happens Now

(Bloomberg) -- Five Star’s Luigi Di Maio and Matteo Salvini of the League have agreed to a coalition deal to govern Italy. But there are still a few more steps before they take control of the country.

Here’s what’s coming up:

  • Salvini may speak after meeting with League leadership in Milan
  • Di Maio is campaigning in the north ahead of regional elections on Sunday. He’s due to speak at 6:30 p.m.
  • Five Star members vote on the coalition program. Online polls close at 8 p.m.

  • League party members expected to vote on the program over the weekend in town squares across the country
  • The Democratic Party of outgoing Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni may elect a new leader

  • Regional election in Valle d’Aosta in the Alps. Both Di Maio and Salvini have joined the campaign, looking to maintain the momentum of their successes in March’s general election
  • League may announce result of members ballot on coalition deal

  • Salvini says they’ll go to see President Sergio Mattarella. Top of their agenda: who will be prime minister?

  • Mattarella may take 24 hours to reflect after his talks with the party leaders, so it might be Tuesday before he nominates a premier.

And then...

  • Once the new leader has been announced, he or she will hold talks with parties on who the ministers should be. If consultations go smoothly, the new government will be sworn in and then seek a vote of confidence in Parliament. That could happen by the end of next week.
