(Bloomberg) -- Iran’s defense ministry said an explosion near a key military site was caused by a gas tank leak, a blast that lit up the night sky over Tehran and shook residents.
No military installations have been affected by the incident close to the Parchin base south of the capital, ministry spokesman Davoud Abdi said in comments broadcast on state TV early Friday. The fire was put out by emergency services and no casualties were reported, Abdi said.
Mobile-phone footage showing a large, orange glow over Tehran was published earlier by the state-run Young Journalists’ Club. Parchin is thought to have played a role in Iran’s past nuclear activities.
