The Indian Air Force confirmed that Chief of Defence Staff Bipin Rawat, along with his wife and 11 others have died in a chopper crash.

General Bipin Rawat was on a visit to Defence Services Staff College, Wellington (Nilgiri Hills) to address the faculty and student officers of the Staff Course today.

Cabinet Committee On Security To Meet At 6:30 P.M.

National broadcaster Doordarshan News confirmed that the Cabinet Committee on Security will meet at 6:30 p.m. today. The committee comprises PM Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar.

The meeting will be chaired by the Prime Minister.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is expected to brief the Parliament during the ongoing winter session about details of the crash of the IAF chopper carrying CDS Bipin Rawat and others, government broadcaster DD News reported.

Singh has also briefed Prime Minister Narendra Modi about the crash, ANI reported.

An Indian Air Force Mi-17V5 helicopter crashed near Coonoor, Tamil Nadu earlier today, as confirmed by the IAF in a twitter post.

Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat was on board, reportedly with colleagues and some family members including his wife. More details are awaited regarding survivors.

An inquiry has been ordered to ascertain the cause of the accident, the IAF said.
