Ninety-three constituencies in the North, West and Central Parts of Gujarat will go into the second phase of polls today. Voter turnout for the first phase of the Gujarat elections for 89 seats, held on 9 December, stood at 66.75 percent.

The high-voltage campaigning in the state ended on 12 December. The results will be declared on 18 December.

Security Beefed Up

Special deployment of the police has been made for the elections and for law and order.

Apart from the 112 general observers deployed by the Election Commission of India (ECI) for the Gujarat elections, 70 counting observers have been appointed by the ECI for counting of votes registered in the Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) which will be carried out on 18 December in 37 selected regions of the state.

To take care of the law and order situation, the ECI has deployed hundreds of companies of the Central Armed Police Force (CAPF), 12 companies of Rapid Action Force (RAF) and 19 more companies of the State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) for the election.

During elections in the second phase, 1,700 of the critical poling booths will be covered under the web casting with constant monitoring of these booths.

In the 'dry' state of Gujarat, the police and administration have seized around Rs 53 crore worth of goods for violation of the state's liquor prohibition policy. The seizure was carried out as a special drive and a part of the election procedure.

An analysis of the affidavits of 822 candidates out of the total 851 in fray for the second phase of Gujarat Assembly polls, showed that 101 candidates – or 12 percent – were facing criminal cases, including serious charges such as murder, kidnapping and rape, according to two NGOs.

The analysis was carried out by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and Gujarat Election Watch. As many as 64 candidates (8 percent) are facing serious criminal cases.

A party-wise analysis found that 22 out of 86 BJP candidates were facing serious criminal charges, while the Congress gave tickets to as many as 25 such candidates for the second phase of polls, a report by the NGOs said.

The BJP is fielding the most number of candidates with 93 aspirants, with the Congress close on their heels with 91. A total of 350 candidates will contest the elections independently, including Dalit leader Jignesh Mevani.

In all, there are 199 crorepatis contesting the election, 66 of whom belong to the BJP and 67 from the Congress.

Phase 1 Voter Turnout Dipped 3% From 2012

The final voter turnout in the first phase of the Gujarat elections for 89 seats held on 9 December stood at 66.75 percent, the Election Commission said on Sunday, 10 December.

The poll panel had earlier declared an estimated 68 percent voter turnout.

In the 2012 elections, 71.32 percent voter turnout was recorded in Gujarat for all the 182 seats.

EC Orders Repolling in 6 Booths

The Election Commission on Tuesday ordered repolling in six booths where first-phase polling was held on 9 December. The repolls will be held on 14 December.

Chief Electoral Officer of Gujarat, BB Swain, said the poll panel has cancelled the results stored in the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) in six booths in four constituencies of the first phase of elections.

The presiding officers of these booths had forgotten to wipe out the mock drill poll results, necessitating the re-election.
