Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani Resigns

The former BJP state president was sworn in as the chief minister on Aug. 7, 2016.

Vijay Rupani resigned as chief minister of Gujarat on Saturday in a surprise move ahead of elections in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's home state late next year.

The former Bhartiya Janta Party state president submitted his resignation at the Raj Bhavan in the state's capital Gandhinagar, The Hindu reported. He succeeded Anandiben Patel and was sworn in as the chief minister on Aug. 7, 2016.

"I want to thank BJP for giving me this opportunity to serve as Gujarat's CM. During my tenure, I got the opportunity to add to the development of the state under PM Modi's leadership," said Rupani according to an ANI tweet.

His resignation comes a year before the state heads to the polls at the end of 2022.
