Ginsburg Speaks in Court Argument One Day After Hospitalization

(Bloomberg) -- Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg spoke at length during oral arguments Wednesday while she remains in a hospital for a benign gallbladder condition.

Ginsburg raised concerns about a Trump administration effort to grant employers a broad right to a religious or moral exemption from the Obamacare requirement that they offer free birth control through their health-care plans.

The justices are hearing the argument by telephone because of the coronavirus pandemic.

“The glaring feature of what the government has done in expanding this exemption is to toss to the wind entirely Congress’s instruction that women need and shall have seamless, no-cost comprehensive coverage,” she said.

Ginsburg, 87, underwent non-surgical treatment for a benign gallbladder condition and will be in the hospital for a day or two, the U.S. Supreme Court said Tuesday, in the latest health scare for its oldest justice.
