Ghana Ex-Leader Mahama Seeks to Stand for Presidency in 2020
(Bloomberg) -- Ghana’s former President John Dramani Mahama said he wants to stand as a candidate in the country’s presidential elections in 2020.
Mahama, 59, who lost a bid for a second four-year term as president to Nana Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party in 2016, will contest for the nomination of the National Democratic Congress at the party’s leadership summit in December, he said Thursday in a broadcast on Accra-based Citi FM.
“I’ve taken into consideration the groundswell of support and the never-ending calls and encouragement from a large section of our party elders and Ghanaians of diverse backgrounds,” he said.
A successful bid for the NDC’s candidacy will see Mahama and Akufo-Addo facing off for the presidency for a third time. Since coming to power, Akufo-Addo’s government has overseen an acceleration in economic growth after the West African nation turned to the International Monetary Fund in 2015 for an almost $1 billion bailout program.
