Former NSC Official Victoria Coates Heads to UAE as Energy Envoy

Former Deputy National Security Advisor Victoria Coates arrived in Abu Dhabi in her new role as a Department of Energy envoy and will focus on working with the United Arab Emirates before moving to Saudi Arabia, a senior administration official said.

Coates will work on ways to strengthen ties with the UAE, with a focus on energy infrastructure, cybersecurity and artificial intelligence, said the official, who asked not to be identified discussing Coates’s travel.

Her move to Saudi Arabia will come after the Covid-19 pandemic subsides, the official said. The kingdom has struggled with spiking cases as it’s sought to reopen its economy.

Coates, who oversaw Middle East and North Africa issues on President Donald Trump’s National Security Council, was named a senior adviser to Energy Secretary Dan Brouillette in February.
