Egypt’s Sisi to Meet Israel Premier for Talks on Monday
(Bloomberg) -- An Israeli prime minister officially visited Egypt for the first time in about a decade, as President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi reaffirmed his country’s support of a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Israeli premier Naftali Bennett met Sisi in the Red Sea resort of Sharm El-Sheikh on Monday. In their talks, Sisi stressed the need to maintain calm between Palestinians and Israelis while Egypt tries to ease tensions between Palestinian factions, the presidency said.
Sisi also referred to the “importance” of the international community’s support for Egypt’s efforts in rebuilding “Palestinian areas,” according to the statement.
Israeli media described Bennett’s trip to neighboring Egypt as the first official visit by a prime minister since Benjamin Netanyahu in January 2011. Egypt, which became the first Arab country to normalize relations with Israel about four decades ago, has been joined in the past year by nations including the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain.
