Denmark Says Many Pension Plans in Dividend-Tax Scandal a ‘Sham’

(Bloomberg) -- Denmark says it’s now clear that many of the pension claims being investigated in a $2.1 billion dividend-tax refund scandal were fraudulent.

According to documents filed with the U.S. District Court Southern District of New York and seen by Bloomberg News, lawyers representing Denmark say the pension funds targeted in the case were never covered under a tax treaty entitling them to refunds.

“Many of the defendant pension plans were a complete sham,” the lawyers wrote in the documents. At the same time Denmark, is seeking to add dozens of defendants to the 184 complaints already filed, as the case is heard in the U.S., the documents show.
